ABOUT THIS EPISODE

God does stuff. At a moment in history when the Earth was very evil, God took action. Yes, there was judgement; and yes, there was grace. What is He doing in your life? He is not a distant God.

In the time of Noah. How does it relate to what's happening today? And so Jesus goes on to talk a little bit more about that. In Matthew. He says in those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn't realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. And that is the way it will be when the son of man comes. See, people just won't even know. People won't even care. People won't even understand. They will be doing their own thing. They will be party and they were having a good time and they'll just miss it. They won't even know. And so what's the world like now? is now the time that Jesus returns? I mean that's the million dollar question, right. But people the world I won't even care about that. They won't even cross their mind. Oh No, destruction is coming. Oh No, right, Jesus coming back, I don't care. That's what it was like in the days of Noah. But what was specifically going on that broke God's heart? What broke God's heart and we read in Genesis Chapter six, verse two and four. It says as the son of God, the Sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. In those days and for some time after, giant nephalites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times. So remember in Genesis Chapter Three that God gave the world a promise. Right, the devil tricked Adam and Eve. They sinned and God's like, devil, you're not gonna win. You might get their heel, but the seat of the woman is going to crush your head. You're are got going to win. The seat of the woman is going to win. And so if I was the devil, I would want to mess up the seat of the woman. Right, if the seat of the woman is what's going to destroy me, then I'm gonna go and destroy it. And so whatever they could do to mess it up, to get in the way, to stop it, I think he would go for it. And so the question becomes who are the sons of God? There's debates about that and I don't think we can know for sure. However, in the book of Job, which is also a very old text in the scriptures, the sons of God are in reference to angels, and so it makes sense, and in some crazy way, because we don't understand this today, but there's it makes sense that the angels came and and have children with humans, which, again, just think about how evil could the world get that God would have to destroy it? And God created human beings in his image to reproduce after their own kind, and angels were created completely separately. They weren't supposed to marry, they don't reproduce, and now it's getting all messed up and that's a problem. God's like, how the like? We can't, we can't do this. I need a I need a do over. Does anyone need to do over in life? You wish you could go back like ten years, ten minutes, fifty years? I just need a do over on the golf course. Right, you need a mulligance with let me. Let me do that again. Right, let me. This is a cosmic do over, a cosmic let's try this again. And God said, I'm gonna give you a hundred and twenty years and then the wickedness will be wiped out. But in contrast, okay, in contrast to that supreme wickedness, that totally, completely evil, there was a man whose name was noah, and Noah found faith, favor with the Lord.

This is good, says. This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God. Noah was the father of three sons, Sham, Ham and JP. Noah, in the midst of evil, chaos, horrible, found favor with the Lord. Where do you find favor? Was He like walking around like where favor like? Where are you favor? Right? I need some favor from the right. Did he didn't find favor. Favor found him. Favor can better be understood as grace, and grace is undeserved. It's unmerited, unearned favor. God giving us something we don't deserve. Noah, out of all the people on the Earth, God's like I'm gonna Give You my grace. It's the first time that word is used in the Bible. And so noah has this favor and he is righteous. What made him righteous? What made him right with God? Was it all the good things that he did? Was it all the good kind stuff he was doing? Was it what he was preaching? The text says he was righteous because he walked in close fellowship with God. Look at the connection between these words. He walked with God, he was with God, he was had a right relationship with God. He was with him and because of that he was made righteous. And the righteousness was something that was given to him. It was grace. It wasn't earned, it wasn't uh, it was undeserved. He received it. He he got favor from God and because of that he was righteous and he walked with God. And that's the same for you today too. If you are righteous, if you are right with God, it's because you are walking with him, you have a relationship with God. It's not anything that you've done to earn it. It's because God looked down and said, I'm gonna give you my favor, I'm gonna Give You my grace. You don't have to earn it, you don't have to do anything, and because of that you are righteous to walk with me. And when you walk with God, God talks. God talks to you and some of you are like God, I haven't heard from God in a long time. Does God even know I'm here? Does God even know I exist? Does God even care about me? It's probably because you're not walking with him. You're probably running off doing your own thing, running off to this and run into that and running over here and running that and running that. It's like, just start walking and God start talking. All right, just start walking with God and he will talk to you. So what's he say? He says to Noah, I've decided to destroy all the living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along the earth. To know. It's like, I don't want you to talk about that to me, God, you're gonna Destroy Everything. Guy's like, hold on, let me finish my thought. Here you're gonna be good, you're gonna make it through, and here's how you want you to do and I want you to build a large boat. And that was like what what did you say, God? A large of what? Like these aren't exactly like ocean large boat people right, like, what is this got? What are you telling me to do? Just tell me, God. Guy's like, okay, fine, wood right, Cypress, would you know what Cypress would is. Noah, okay, yeah, yeah, okay, I can go get some Cypress Wood. All right, I can do that. And God says this, he says, and waterproof it with tar inside and out, constructed decks in stalls throughout its interior. Make the boat four fifty feet long, which is a football field...

...and a half, seventy five FT wide and forty five FT high. These proportions are proportions. They build modern, large boats in some of them. Okay, how in the world didn't Noah, who knew nothing about boats, never built a large boat before, get proportions of a large boat to float and sail? Right? How does that happen? God says, leave an eighteen opening below the roof all the way around the boat and put the door, the one door, on the side, and build three decks inside the boat, lower, middle and upper. Our God is a god of details. He's given US instructions, he's given us specific things to do and to to act on. So often we find ourselves wanting to do life our own way, don't we? We're like, Oh, I watched this youtube video the other day and I'm gonna do it like they do it, because that was awesome, like if God has given us details, God has given us specifics on what to do, we must listen to what he has to say and do what he wants us to do. Because that's what Noah did. He did everything exactly as God had commanded him. What if we live like that? No one never saw rain Nover, no one never built a large boat, and yet God says, build me a boat, it's gonna rain. Here's exactly how to do it. Go do it, and no, it did it. Why do we, or is it just me, have to know all the details before we do stuff that God tells us to do? God, show me how it all works out. God show me this detail. I want to know this, I want to know that. I don't understand this. God, just tell me all of it. God's like, I got it for you. I got this, but you gotta Trust me with what you do know, with what you do understand. You gotta take that step with me for what you already know. and Noah did exactly as God had commanded him. What if? What if we did too? What would our lives be like if we did that? So Noah was six hundred years old when on the Seventeenth Day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky. And rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights. This is not normal rain like we know today. Notice the waters came up from the bottom and from the top. What did God do on day two of creation when he created the dry ground? He separated the what? The waters above and the waters below? This is a the creation of that day, right. He separated it. And on the flood it's like the waters above came down, the waters below came up, the waters below. I mean, just think about that for a second, right, if all the ground just went this earth was destroyed. Is what I'm saying. It was a crazy, horrible right, just the earth is just upheaval. Everything is going like crazy. And so that's the rain. That's what happened. And remember there were some animals involved, right, and those are two by two. They came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes. A male and a female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded. Noah of each kind. Okay, there's the Jillions of animals on the earth. Right, there's only somewhat limited of a kind, when within the kind there are many varieties, adaptations, species, all that stuff. Okay, so...

...you just need a kind. You bring a kind into the boat. So the people ask what happened to the dinosaurs, the big huge dinosaurs. Why would you take a t rex on a boat? That's dumb. Right, they don't fit. Right, they died in the flood or whatever. They took the little ones, the little kind. They took the kind into the boat. And remember, there was two. There's two of each animal and there's seven of some other animals that God said to know what to go. How. How do you do that? Right, build a large boat. I don't know what that means. It's gonna rain. I don't know what that means. Go get every single animal on the face of the planet. What like? What are you telling me to do, God, what does the Bible say? Happen? Two by two, they what they came see the boat. There's not like no one went out and like trapped. The alligator was like come on, man, right, it came. They came onto the boat. And this is some good advice for you as you're building something in your life. You are building something. You're building a business, you're building a relationship, you're building a reputation, you're building something. God has told you to build something. You build it the way that God tells you to build it, and they will come. God will bring it to happen. So, yes, you're building something that wants to impact other people. Yes, you're building something so that you could serve other people. Yes, you're building something and so you could love other people. But you got to build it according to the way that God told you to build it. And if you do it the way that God told you to do it, he's gonna be the one to make it all come together and make it all happen. And not only does God do that right, God's doing a lot of stuff in this next God closes the door behind them and they're all on the boat. They're already they got one giant door. How are we gonna get this? God closes it, God does it. God is the one who does the saving. God is the one who secures everything. This wooden arc is a picture of our salvation with God. The Apostle Peter, who wrote first. Peter Looks back at this event in chapter three and says it's like baptism. The way that Noah and his family made it through the floods is like baptism. You're safe, you're secure with Jesus, you're you're in there, you're shut inside this thing and you're gonna make it through and when you come out the other side it's a total new start. It's a new beginning, it's a new life, it's a new chance, it's a new opportunity. That's what God transforms us through, and that's a picture of baptism. Peter tells us so. Finally, the rains are coming right the waters covered even the highest mountains on Earth, rising more than twenty two FT above the highest peaks, and all the living things on earth died. Birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people. Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died. God wiped out every living thing on earth. People, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground and the birds of the sky all were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat, and the floodwaters covered the earth for a hundred, fifty, how many days? A hundred and fifty days. How many days? But God remember Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. God remembers you.

God never forgets you. God never forgets where you are. Life is crazy. You're floating in this boat. What's happening? God, are you? Do you care about me? Do you wonder about me? God, it says, I remember you, I have you right where I want you. I have not forgotten you. God remember Noah and all that time. God remembers you. And so the flood waters receded. Eventually, you're not swimming today. Right, exactly five months from the time the flood began, the boat came to rest on the mountains of error. At that Sen Noah starts checking the sea. What's the water doing? Right, what's happening here? He sends a Raven Out, he sends a cove out, he sends a dove out again. Right, he's waiting these days. He released the dove again and this time the dove returned to him in the evening with something. What did the Dove Return with? You knew that, and I got this image by just searching peace on Google image. There it is. Imagine that right, it's peace, it's it's the waters, the chaos, the crazy is is ending as peace. But it's really a picture of renewal, of of new opportunity, of new creation. That's the dove with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then no one knew the floodwaters were almost gone. Right, the bird is picking out something from the ground. And so he waited another seven days and then released the dove again, and this time it did not come back. Right. Why would I go back to that place? Two more months went by and at last the earth was dry. They've been in this boat, okay, floating. This is in a sailboat. They don't have control over anything. Right. They are floating in darkness, floating in a boat for almost a year. Right there, in there for five months. It took five months for the waters to go down. There now waiting two more months. It's just like get me out of this place, right, I'm gonna knock down this door. But Noah and his family. They waited for God's timing, and God's timing almost always is longer than your timing. It's almost always longer than my timing. We're waiting, we're waiting, we're waiting and I would just get out of that thing as fast as possible. Right, give me out. They're waiting for God m to say something. So God said to Noah, leave the boat right, thank you Jesus, all of you and your wives and your sons and their wives, and release all the animals, the birds, the livestock and the small animals that story along the ground so they can be fruitful and multiply throughout the earth. And so noah, his wife and his sons and their wives left the boat. What would you do if you were stuck in a confined space for a year with your family and you just wanted to get out and experience normal life? Right, what's the first thing that you do? Noah built an altar to the Lord and there he sacrifices burnt offerings, the an...

...wils and birds that have been approved for that purpose. Noah, first thing he did, first opportunity to get out of the boat, he worshiped God, he worshiped the Lord. Man. We would run to so many things. I would run to so many things. Right One, to worshiping the Lord. That's what we gotta do. And for those of you that have been through some stuff like you've been in a boat, you've been floating, you're wondering if God even remembers you, and God speaks and says hey, it's time. You're like, all right, let's go, let's get out of here. But you have to remember to worship God, and I think you do. If you've been through all of that, if you've been through that storm, if you've been through that flood, if you've been through that and God saved you, if you're still here after what you've been through, that's worth that to praise God for right as soon as you can. Yeah, I'm still here, I'm still breathing out of all the people on the Earth, God chose me. Hallelujah. Thank you Jesus. Right, absolutely so. God blessed Noah and his sons and told them be fruitful and multiply fill the earth. That's exactly what God says to the first human beings, genesis, and all the animals of the earth and all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that scurry along the ground and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed them in your power. This is all new stuff. Right here, I've given you them for food. That wasn't happening before the flood, and now it is. Just as I have given you grain and vegetables, but you must never eat any meat that still has the life blood in it. He says, yes, I'm confirming my covenant. That's a special word. It's not a contract, it's not a two way agreement, and the Covenant is God saying I'm doing this whether you like it or not. This is the way it's gonna work. My Covenant With You. Never again will floodwaters kill all living creatures. Never again will have flood destroy the earth. What will destroy the Earth One day? According to Peter, fire, not water. God said, I'm giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all the living creatures for all the generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. So every time you see that rainbow you say thank you, God for your promise. So that's usually where the story ends, right. It usually ends there, but we're not genesis, chapter nine, verse eighteen. The sons of Noah who can him out of the boat with their father, where Sham Ham and Viv. Ham is the father of Canaan. From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the Earth. We're gonna talk about that next week. After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground and he planted a vineyard and one day he drank some wine he had made and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent. Yes, I'm reading the Bible. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers. Then Sham and JPF took a robe, held it over their shoulders and backed into the tent to cover their father, and as they did this, they looked the other way so that they would not see him naked. And when Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done. He then cursed Canaan, the son of Ham. May Canan be cursed, may he be the lowest of servants to his relatives. Then Noah said, may the Lord, the God of Sham, be blessed and May Canan be his servant. May God spanned the territory of j FIF made...

J fifth share the prosperity of Sham, and May Canaan be his servant. Noah lived another three fifty years after the great flood. He lived nine fifty years and then he died. The man that God gave undeserved favor towards, who was righteous because he walked with the Lord, who was saved, made it through the worldwide flood, found himself naked, drunk, laying in his tent, and that is a real challenge to me and I hope to you too, that like that could be me, that could be you, it could be any of us, that God has brought us through some amaze and we were just praising God for that, and we absolutely right. We need to do that, and we need to do it because we cannot forget what we've done, we cannot forget what we've been through, we cannot forget what God has done in our life, because we might find ourselves somewhere that we never wished or never hoped anyone would be, let alone us, and we just we have to be careful about that. And so I told you write our theme or two words. Do something, do something right, do something ham he he sees that his father was in this state. He was naked and he went outside and told his brothers. Ham was the talker. He saw his dad was in this and he went and, I don't know, maybe gossiped about him or or, you know, wanted to like, Hey, come look at this right. We don't know what he said. But then there were the two other brothers. And what did they do? They did something Sham and J pot. They took a row Oben, they held it over their shoulders and they backed into the tent to cover their father and as they did this, they looked the other way so that they would not see him naked. They didn't look. They wanted to respect and honor their father by the way that they cared for him and loved him. And I think that this story of Noah should encourage us that are gone. We serve, takes action, he does stuff. You don't just sit passively behind us. I hope it gets better. Right, our God is actively at work in our world. He's actively at work in your life and he gives in the middle of judgment, in the middle of like I gotta do, you know, we gotta bring consequence. He gives undeserved favor, he gives grace to you. No matter who you are, and that race is not a private thing. It's not just between you and God, although it transforms your relationship with you and God, it demands that our relationships with other people are transformed to the way we relate to other people has to change because of the grace, the favor that God has given to us. It has to change. And so when we see someone in our world who is in a hard spot, like you could say Noah was right, our hearts have to break for them and we have to honor them by the way that we love them and care for them. And so today, if if you're not sure if you're safe in that boat, you know, if God were to bring the end of times down again, and this is it, right, this is the moment you walk out of here and remembers not in the rain, but...

...you see a fireball or something. Right, are you safe with Jesus? Are you in that boat? Has God closed the door on your salvation, your right relationship with God? If you're not sure, you can be sure today. Just say God, I trust you, God, I receive your grace in my life. Lord Jesus, I believe that what you have done for me is enough. I'm not trying to do something to earn it, I'm just doing stuff because of what you've already done for me, Jesus, and so if that's you, that can be you today. You can be safe, you can be said, no matter what happens, you can make it through that flood. And if you've done that before, if you would call yourself a child of God, then I think the challenge for us today is to consider that our world is full of evil, our world is full of sin and people are in places that are really hard and we can't do nothing. Don't do nothing, you have to. We have to do something. Amen, let's pray, Lord, Jesus, thank you for what you have done for me. Lord, you have given US undeserved favor. Lord, you know the hard places we find ourselves in, the choices we've made, and for some reason you look down and you say, God, I or I choose them. I want them to be with me, I want them to have a relationship with me, and you're the one, Jesus, that does the work, that closes the door, that secures our right relationship with you for all eternity. So, God, I pray that you would do that for someone here today and for everyone who considers themselves a Christian, who who this is true about them. They're safe in that boat. Lord, I pray that every person we meet, we recognize that every single one of us is going through a hard time, every single one of us is is something in our life isn't exactly the way it should be, and we may or may not be lying naked drunk on the floor of our house. But God, if we and when we encounter people like that, may we love them well, may we care for them well, may we honor them as a created in the image of God. So the Lord, help us to do something in your name. Amen.
