Leave The Tomb (2:11-23)

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Have you ever felt guilty about something you've done? God loves you. No matter what you've done in the past. Your record of the charges against you has been ailed to the cross - leave it there and let it go!

...is anyone ever seen toy story for I'm, not a big movie person? I haven'twatched a lot of movies and, yes, I know we're sitting in a movie theaterright now. So it's kind of ironic, but it's true. I recently watched toy story for and Imet a character for the very first time and immediately when I saw thischaracter, I knew I had a sermon illustration. I should probably watch.I should watch more movies. I have more ideas, but well I knew it was going tocome. I didn't know it was going to happen this fast. It was just a coupleweeks ago and in toy story, for we meet a character, her name was Bonny andBonnie was. It was her first day of kindergarten and so woodie. You knowthe famous Toy sneaks into Bonnie's backpack, because what he's going tomake sure she has a great day at kindergarten and so bonny sits at herdesk and they're doing some craft and some big kid comes up and steals allher stuff and she starts crying and life is miserable, and so would hesprings into action. He sneaks out of the backpack and he runs over to whathe can find as the trash cannon and dumps it on Bonnie's, desk and Bonny sees what's in front of her and she picks it up and she begins to make something she puts the eyes on in themouth she's, using whatever she can find in the trash. can she puts the popsicle sticks on herfeet and what she makes she calls forky everybody say hi to Forky forky had a problem. He would always at every opportunityfind a way into the trash can and woody would have to spring intoaction, and he would come into the trash gain and pull them out of thetrash can and again into the trash can out of the trash can into the trash canout of the trash Gan slowly, making his way every opportunity he had every freechance. He would just slowly into the trash can. Would he cud saves them allthe toys bring it to action, save them into the trash can out of the trash caninto the trash. Can Out of the trash. Can it's felt like the whole movie atleast half the movie was forky going into the trash can and coming out ofthe trash camp, and so finally Woodie said forky. Whyon earth do you keep going to the trash can and what we learned was that this was forkes identity. He was trashand trash went in the trash can and in fork's own words. The trash was warm cosy and safe and so forky when in the trash camp, but Bonnie who created forky, saw forkyvery very differently and forky had a decision to make. Was He going to live and to theidentity that he was trash, or was he going to live in the identitythat he was created...

...by somebody that loved him, that cherished him and that even wrote her special imprint on the bottom ofhis popsicle stick feed forky had a choice to make that everysingle one of us has to make every single day. It may be every moment of every day. What is your identity and where does itcome from? Are you trash or does your Creator have something somuch better for you? Jesus offers US something so much better and if you've been given life like fork,he was right. He was trash, but he was given life you've been given life byJesus. Then, why do we still? Why do you stillkeep running to the trash? Can where it's warm and it's cozy and it'ssafe, because Jesus has something so muchbetter to offer you a life so much better for you. So today we are going to continue inthe stream of messages about how God wants to give us something so muchdifferent in our life. He's not giving US rules to follow. He's not given us a new kind of way to live, he's, giving us life abundant, thriving life both now and for all eternity and Paul says it. This way. He says inclasons two twenty three, that these rules may seem wise, but they provide no help. Somebody sayno help in conquering a person's evil desires. These rules, theseexpectations- these do this, do that they provide no help in conquering aperson's evil desires. So the question is: What are your evil desires? Whatare evil desires? Well, Paul will get into some very specific and practicalexplanations of what some of those evil desires are in the coming weeks. Wewill touch on them, but today I want you to think about those evil desires,as your list so now would be a great time to find this list paper that youshould have received when you came in today. If you don't have one, there aremore of them on the half wall over there when and on the way, if you'regoing to exit. If you need one, maybe I could help you get get one and get apen because we're going to be using this today a lot. So what I want you to do with your list isI want you to write down what would be on your list, so what would be on itright? Well, maybe you've done something that you regret doing thatyou feel guilty about in your life, something wrong. You've done somethingwrong in your life. You could write that down on this piece of paper. Everybody's done that, but I understand, maybe you don't wantto write exact words. Maybe you want to draw a picture. Maybe you want to drawsomething or write something symbolic. It doesn't really matter. What'simportant. Is that you and God know what it is, and it's in your heart- andyou know so whatever you want to write down on your list- write it down, andyou know what writing something that you've done wrong. Nobody likes tothink about doing that. We've all been there. We've all done that, so I've gotsomething a little bit different to to...

...help you figure out today what we wantto figure out, how do we conquer our evil desires? This is what the point ofall this is: How do we conquer our evil desires? So here's the big question. Iwant you to think about what do you believe to be true about yourself thatis really alive from the enemy and not a label given to you by your Creator. It's a deep question, but I want toread it to you one more time. What do you believe to be true about yourself? That is really a lie from the enemy and not a label given to you by yourCreator, see this question: It's not just the right or wrong. I feel guiltyabout this or that this is like a route question. It gets at the thing behindthe thing, the thing in your heart and your soul, that kind of is at the rootof everything else, and so, if you think about that rightdown whatever you can on that piece of paper, and so for some of us, it might be theneed for control, for example, and if, for some reason, you're out of controlin your life or you perceived that life is out of control like you wouldliterally do anything that you could do to get back into control, or maybe it'sthe need and a desire for pleasure, and if life isn't pleasing to you, if it'snot going your way, you will literally do anything that you can do to get backinto having a pleasure, ful life, or maybe it's just pride. It's just youknow what I like my list. I feel comfortable with my list. I couldn'timagine my life being any different without my list. It's the thing behindthe thing: it's the thing at the root, it's the thing at your heart and inyour soul, and what I want you to know today isthat everything on your list separates you from God. You are dead, spiritually as a resultof everything on your list. Yes, even that one time when youlied in secondgrade separates you from God forever. I know it sounds like a lot, but it'strue, but I got some good news for you today.Does anyone want to hear some good news? We like good news right. The good newsis that you were dead because of your sins because of your sinful nature wasnot yet caught away. Then God made you alive. He made you alive. Let me saythat again he made you alive with Christ, he forgave all of your sin andhe cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailingit to the cross, and in this way he disarmed the spiritual rulers andauthorities and he shamed them publicly by his victory over them. On the cross, the good news is that Jesus Christ has paid for everything on your list and hehas taken your list my list and he has nailed it to the cross. It's taken care of it's over, it's donewith it's gone, and Jesus has done this for you. So the question is maybe you're seeingthis for the first time today that your record of wrong doing thecharges against you, the things that you feel guilty about feel shame about.Jesus has paid for them all already on the cross two sand years ago, they'vebeen nailed to the cross that you can be forgiven. You can have a new life, you can have new hope. You can be a new creation, and Jesus has done everythingpossible to make that happen, and maybe your record of wrong doing has neverbeen nailed to that cross. You've never made that choice for yourself. You'venever stepped into that reality, and I...

...want to offer you the opportunity todayto do something symbolic, but just to take your list and to bring it up hereand to Nell it to the cross, because that's where it is and if you feel like you've, neverreally trusted in Jesus you've. Never given your life to Jesus he's, neverforgiven! You of your sin. Let me tell you he has and you canbelieve it and receive it and step into that reality. Today, just bring yourlist to the Cross and nail it there, I'm serious! You could do it right now,it's a good thing and everyone's going to be looking at you and we all goingto celebrate with you we're all going to walk with you every single step ofthe way and we're going to going to be so excited for you. If that's what yougot to do this morning, we'd be so so excited, and I know it's a little strange. Iknow getting up and doing something like that is a lot and you know what,if you want to do it later, that's fine! Any time. Any time would be perfect. The rest of the service today, Hey man, a man malet nail at my friend, it's paid for it's paid for raise the Lord Rise, the Lord, but I thank you that you paid for oursin in fall and total complete. You don't ask for our effort to do anything. You've already done it. You don't all have to get up at thismoment unless you want to we're going to get up later, but it's a powerful thing to see your sin nailed to the Cross. It's paid for it's over. It's done withI'm going to have some fun illustrations in a minute her. If you want to come, you can comeI'm going to I'm going to keep going here. So what happens in our life? You can keep moving, as I thought is that we start to then kind of pursue other things. We realize that life is different withJesus. We realize we're forgiven we're saved we're born into the family, ofGod were a son and daughter of the king of kings and the Lord of Lords like. That is our reality. That is who we are, and Jesus has made, that possible forevery single one of us for every single person, who's believed in him. That isthe reality, and yet, while that is true, and yet like forky, everything inside of us, slowly pullsus back to this list. We slowly come back to the list. It draws us back, we driftback, we just keep going back to it, and sometimes it's not just the slowdrift. It's a fast drift and we're come back, and we take this thing and we sayI need it. It makes me warm and makes me cozy and it makes me feel safe and we just can't leave our list alone. It defines us it's our life, it's ourstory. We can't forget about this stuff. We we just have to do something aboutthis list like like. We just enjoy it,...

...we love having it and somethingsomething gets our attention. It's like e. Did you see that something somethinggets our attention and what it is just generally speaking and major ideaterms, what gets our attention is? Rules rules get our attention and rules. They convict us about our list and what we try and do then, is we tryand take care of the list, and what happens is is that we come across different people in ourlife. Maybe someone shows up at work for the very first time, a new CO worker and they begin to talkto you about their life, about what they do about. What's new what's goingon and they start telling you about some new habits and new rhythms androutines that they have and it sounds great then it gets alittle strange. They talk about how they sleep on this really hard bed. Then they control themselves discipline their body by like kind of hurtingthemselves, a little bit. They take trips where they go to places wherethey don't speak. For days told you gets a little strange, but then thisperson, this new person that comes into your life, that kind of grabs herattention he's like or she's like, I feel, more spiritually alive than I'veever felt before emotionally, I'm so open, I'm so I'm so in a good placementally man. My mind is sharp. I feel good, and here we are with our list wondering that sounds good. Maybe maybe, if I could do that too, then I could find what I'm looking for. Maybe maybe that would take care of mylist and all along every moment all the timeyou should be hearing alarm bells going off in your head. Saying rules RollsRolls Rolls Rolls because that's exactly what all of those things are.Their rules and Jesus offers US something so muchbetter than rules. He takes our list and has nailed it to the Cross and it's gone it's paid for it's over. It's done and the farther we get away from it. The more we miss the warm cozy feeling of ourlist and it's like we're drug back there, even though we know it's paidfor, but we just something inside of us that takes it off again and then we meet somebody else, a new boyfriend, the girlfriendsomebody with a lot of influence on our life, and they start talking about whatthey've experienced and man. They have a good experience. They say the otherday. I went to this place and it was crazy. There was all these people, wewere in this room and it was like. I had an out of body experience and, likeI just like almost had this vision, I guess it was a vision and there waslike all of us and we were just like worshipping. I don't know whatworshipping is, but we were like worshiping. I was feeling good. I waspraising. I was so full of joy and we were just like praising this. I don'tknow a great big light of some kind of could have been an angel and you're like over here with your list like that sounds so good like if I could just have an experiencelike that, it might be able to do...

...something about this thing. I think Ithink that might be it. I might have to try that and again what should be going off inyour head, as Rolls Rolls Rolls Experience Ride. Do this do that rules, and you have to remind yourself againand again and again that you, you shouldn't even be holding on to yourlist. It's already been paid for it's been taken care of it's nailed to thelist, so just leave it. There forget this other stuff, leave it there, because there's always going to be other things that compete and promise to take careof your list. They're going to look good they're going to catch yourattention, they're going to promise the world, but Jesus has already nailed your listto the cross, so leave it there and all of these other things they arenot connected to Christ, the head of the body, for he holds the whole bodytogether with its joints and ligaments, and it grows, as God nourishes. It see, a spiritual experience like theone I just kind of described. That does not include Jesus. That doesnot include the Bible that does not include the Holy Spirit, cannot do anything for you. A spiritual experience cannot sanctifyyour soul and disciplining your body controllingyour body, I'm gonna, I'm not going to do it this time, type of mentality, disciplining your body cannot sanctify your soul either. Jesus is the only one that can do thatand he is the head of this Church of the church, and all of you who believein trust in Jesus are a part of the church and we all need each other. Justlike our body needs every little part. We need each other that to pray foreach other, encourage each other to keep us pointed and fixed on the cross, reminding each other that our list has been taken care of on the cross. Youdon't need to go over here. You don't need to look at this stuff. It'salready gone, it's left there it's over, it's done it's paid, for we need eachother. Somebody needs you that person next to you needs you to remindourselves about the power of what Jesus has already accomplished for us, but we just love to go back and grabthat list. Just like forky loves to fall into the trash camp over and overagain. We just. We just think for some strange reasonthat this time it'll be different. We go back to the list and we think okay, this time I won't touch it. I won't touch that thing. I won't. I won'thandle this thing. I won't do it this time. I just I just want it next to me.I just feel safe. I feel cozy. It makes me feel warm. I just I just want itwith me, and Jesus just wants to tell you overand over and over again I paid for it. I took care of it. I've cut it off from you. He wants to remind you that you havedied with Christ. He has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the...

...rules of the world? He disarmed the spiritual rulers andauthorities he shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. There is nobody, and there is nothing that can take care of your list, theway that Jesus took care of your list. He is above it all, he is in charge ofit all. He defeated it all and Jesus transforms your life not just from goodto better, not just from lost to found, but from death to life and so take your list. It's nailed tothe cross, he paid for it all. It's nailed there leave it, it's gone. Letit go and live your life live your life. Live your life. Telltell your neighbor live your life live your life, come on, give God just onemore round of praise for the life that he has given. You Has God, given youlife today, hey man amen. Thank you. Jesus! Thank you, Jesus, so we're going to end with aillustration. Some of you already took part in which I absolutely love, but I want you to think if you have togo back and grab your list again, Hey! No, that's fine! We all did it. I didit like ten times to day already. I want you to think about thesequestions on your list. We're going to take a couple of minutes. Actuallywe're going to take three minutes and we're going to think through thesethings and then we're going to sing a song. The song is called just as I am, you might be familiar with it. There's anew version of it that will sing wall stand, will sing, and then you can all go and nail your list again or for the first time to thecross and then, after that song we're going to sing another song which issort of like a celebration song about how our list, everything that we writedown on it. Everything that we feel guilty about everything that we feelshamed about everything on our list, that Jesus is taking care of it he'spaid for it. He has torn the list into a million little pieces and he's castour sin as far as the East is from the West. It's a matthew, West Song. I sawhim in concert a couple years ago and it was amazing he's sitting down at atable, he's writing stuff on his list and it gets to the song. You'll see itit's like. Let I go. You know it's just this big thing, and at that moment helike tears the list and he kind of throws it and they've got confetti, cannons and there's confetti everywhere, and it's like. I just saw my list justexplode in front of me. It's gone it's over and I wish I had confetti cannonsone day we will. We were going to do this. I promise you. I promise youwe're going to do this because to see your list in a million little piecesand your sin cast as far as the East is from the West. Oh Man, you're, freeJesus has set you free, okay, so three questions, do you or have you ever feelguilty about something? You did the answer. That is yes, but you can thinkof something on the surface of what you've done number two: why? What issomething that you run into? That is warm comfy and safe. So this is thedeeper question. This is the thing behind the thing. What what it makesyou keep going back to that place, because it's warm it's company and it'ssafe and number three. Is there anything you are believing aboutyourself? That does not come from God. That's the big question. I think if youcan answer that you're in a really good spot in your life- and I realized thatI don't know I'd love to help- you answerit. If you can't it's a hard one, so those are the three questions we'regoing to take a couple of minutes. I want you to think about them and thenwe'll sing. Remember when that, just as I am song starts, you can all stand upand if you've not nailed it to the cross or if you like, to get it back orwhatever, then we're going to do it, then. So all right here we go.
