What Fills You? (Baptisms!)

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Today we celebrate our first baptisms at ConnectUs Church! God can fill us instead of all the other things that we allow to fill our hearts and minds.

Good to see you today. My name is Kevin. I am the lead pastor of Connector Church and our mission is to connect you to God's next step for your life and it is so good to see you on this very special day. are first ever baptisms as connect US church. Somebody give a little loud noise. There we go. There's going to be lots of clapping, lots of celebrating today and I really want to do give a special welcome to those of you who are joining us for the very first time today. Maybe a family member or friend or neighbor brought you and it's so good that you are here with us. I'm so excited that you're joining us and if you're joining US online, it's so good to see you as well. You've come to celebrate a bunch of people that were saying to you all, saying to the world, give me Jesus, like Jesus has done something for them and it's made all the difference in the world. So they can have you can have everything else, give me Jesus. So it is so good. And we're right in the middle of a teaching series called life hacks. Here we go. We're going to go outside new baptisms in a minute. But I got a little message first from the series life hacks. When you just need a better way. The better way, of course, is Jesus ultimately, but there's a lot of little things that we can do in our life and in our in our world. Is Little will everyday kind of things that are just around that can make a significant difference in your life to make your life better, more efficient, save you some money, whatever the case may be. And so today our life hack has to do with a water bottle. It is important to bring a water bottle with you to the airport. You got to stay hydrated when you travel. I mean, how many you know that? You just got to drink more water in general. You, I mean everyone, we all got to drink more water in general, but it's important when you're traveling. You're expending lots of energy. You got to stay hydrated, you got to feel good. You got to bring a water bottle with you to the airport. Except the problem is is you you can't take a full water bottle in through security, right. So what do you do? You spend five dollars at the you know, convenience store at when you go through security, or or what happens if you just empty it and you bring in empty water bottle through security? Come on, somebody, that is a life hack for you. You take an empty water bottle through security, you find the nearest water fountain, you fill it up and you're good to go. You've got it with you all the time. And whether it's an eight cent water bottle from somewhere or it's a a fancy one that keeps your drink cold all day long, you got to have an empty water bottle to get through security. You got to have one with you. Now. Maybe...

...today you're feeling a little empty. Maybe that's the word that maybe would come to mind. You feel like you've got nothing to give. You you've tried, you know, you show up to work and it's just like, I just got nothing, I got no value to add to this situation, to these people. I just feel empty. or in your relationships, you're going to try a new relationship and it's like, I wonder if anyone's ever going to even notice me, because I just I got nothing to offer. I got no nothing of value to give. I'm so empty. Or maybe you've got dreams to change the world, to do something amazing to impact the community and you know that well. It takes a lot of money to do that and people with a lot of money can invest in stuff and and if there was one word to describe your net worth or your bank account, it just might be empty. But empty gets you through security. Empty is where it's at. Empty as a good place to be. I'm not saying that we need to empty our mind and our soul and our heart of everything. And you know, that sounds very zen, very Buddhist, you know like. I'm not saying that because if we were honest, we're really not all that empty. We're filled with a whole bunch of stuff. We might feel empty, but our minds and our souls are just filled with so much other stuff. And so if we were to, quote unquote, empty ourselves and actually fill ourself with something better, then I think we've got something significant as we're relating these silly, everyday life hack to something deeper, a spiritual truth that you can apply to your life and really make a significant difference in your life. And so, if you're like me at all, I'm going to use this as a as a better I can't, I can't fit stuff in this little water bottle. So just pretend this is our water bottle for the day. There it is. So maybe there we working. I put this serie are. Maybe you're filling your mind and your soul with some stuff like I don't deserve a second chance. Maybe you have thought that or are thinking that. You think I've just messed up too many times. I've disappointed people too many times. I've tried this church thing, I've tried this God thing so many times. It's not even my second chance. It's probably like my fifteen or twenty chance. God certainly not going to give me another chance. Why wouldn't my job Bob Give me another chance? Why would my significant other give me another chance? I've to disappointed them with messed up so many times. I don't deserve a second chance. Or maybe you fill your mind with things like I am my shame and I am my secrets. You're just filled up...

...with all the things that you've done that you wished, you've never would have done. And it's not just things that you've done, but they have become your identity, they become who you are. I am now this thing that I've done. I am the secrets that I try to hide and these are things that we think, things that we do. And just when we think that we're not full enough, right, there's all of these thoughts are so heavy and deep already it's like, let's just add to them some more stuff, right, there's room for more. Just keep pouring it in, like I will always feel and be this way. Like whatever you're dealing with now, it's just going to it's going to be there for the rest of your life and there's nothing you can do about it. You're just always going to feel this way, always going to be this way. Why even bother? And and you're defined by your worst moments, not your best moments. Like we all have best moments in our life and we all have worse moments in our life. Which one are you letting define you? Are you a letting the ones that are not so good that you wish you could forget about, or you room letting the ones that, like heays, you did something well, you graduated from something, you did that, but why spend time thinking about, Oh, I didn't do that, and I screwed up there and I messed up there. which moment do you let define you? And again, when you don't think you have any room left in your mind for all of these things and you're just so beat up, so messed up, there's always room for more and you start to wonder because my life, my dreams, my hopes, they don't even matter. They don't even matter. Why Bother? And all of these things consume our life, consume our thoughts, consume our heart and our soul and they are in there. And why? Why are they in there? Wouldn't it be nice to just say, okay, like forget this stuff right, change your mind, stop thinking about it, stop living this way, just get rid of it, starts something new. Just get get, get over, get be done. Wouldn't it be nice? It's unfortunately not that easy, because this is the default position of all humanity, every one of us, you, me, like we are bent towards being this way. We are broken towards being this way, and it's a result of what's is called the Sin Nature. But Adam and Eve did, the first human beings. They chose to sin, and sin broke...

...the world, it broke you, it it bent us towards these types of thoughts, these types of feelings, this type of life, and then we're sinners by nature and we're sinners, oftentimes by choice to we're honest, and so the Apostle Paul in a letter he wrote called Titus to a young pastor, titus chapter three. If you have your Bible, I encourage you to turn there with me and titus chapter three. If you don't have your Bible, that's all right. The words to be on the screen behind me, as you see, and we'd love to give you a free Bible before you leave today. Just stop by the new here area and we'll make sure you go home with a brand new Free Bible for you. But this is what the Apostle Paul uses words to describe. This what I just showed you. He says once we two were foolish and this obedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lost and pleasures in our lives were full of envy and evil and we hated each other. Now you might not use these exact words to describe your life, but I think there's more truth here than you might first think. Like we've done. I've done some foolish things. Right, maybe you're these are your thoughts. I've done some foolish things and I've disobeyed some people. I've disobeyed my parents, like if they found out stuff that I've did, they would kill me. And those lost and those pleasures that happen in our life, like we just do whatever we want to do and the habits and the addictions that we have are impossible to break. It's like we're enslaved to them. In our life is just full of this stuff and there's nothing that we can do about it. And it's not just what I do, but it's what I've become. And there's a lot of evil and envy. You know, maybe not the whole thing is evil, but maybe maybe there is a lot that is. And we hated each other, but sometimes maybe the worst person that hates somebody is we oftentimes hate ourselves. You think, my hopes, my dreams, my desires, they don't matter. God doesn't care. I certainly don't care. But Titus three, four but the best word in the Bible. But the next couple words are good too. But when God see this stuff, this stuff that we deal with, this stuff that we live with, this stuff that fills our minds and our souls, you don't have to live this way. You don't have to be stuck in this mode, in this way of living. There is a big...

...but when God shows up and it's it's when, it's when. I you know, it's why I do what I do. It's why I preach the way that I preach. It's what breaks my heart for people, for you, for the world, is that so many of us are stuck living like this. But when God shows up in your life, this doesn't have to be you, this doesn't have to be look, look what Paul says. He continues. But when God, our savior, revealed his kindness and love. Now, I don't know what your view of God is, and maybe today you showed up a church in a movie theater because you think if you walked into a church building that God would be so mad at you he strike you dead as soon as you cross through the door. so He's like, I'm coming to a movie theater. What's God gonna do here? Right? But God shows up in kindness to you, no matter who you are or what you've done, and he shows up with love, no matter who you are or what you've done. And what's he do? He saves us, he saves me, he's he's saved the people who are getting baptized today. He saves us from this, and it's not because of the righteous things we've done, but because of his mercy, His mercy. It's not because of anything good inside of us, any good stuff that you do, showing up the church, you know, praying more, reading your Bible. It's not because of that. Is Not even because of getting baptized. It's because of God's mercy, him not giving us what we deserve. It's all because of God. He saved us for himself. What did he do? He washed away our sins. So all of this stuff, let's let's get rid of it. Hey, he washed it away. It's gone. It's nowhere to be found. Where to go? I don't know where it went. It's a magic trick. Where where to go is forgiven. It's paid for. God took care of it. The penalty is paid for, it is done with, it is over. He washed away our sins and he gave us a new birth and a new life through the Holy Spirit. We need something new. We need a better water bottle to take through airport security. Right, look at that thing, that whole thing. I'll keep you hydrated for good. We want new stuff, new life, new birth, new hope, and that can be yours today, right now, in this moment, something new, a new passion, a new life, a new way of...

...looking at the world, and it's comes through the Holy Spirit, and it's this Holy Spirit that's given us all this stuff. He generously poured out the spirit upon us through Jesus Christ, our Savior. This we need some water here, look at this beautiful there we go. He generously, overflowing, poured out the spirit upon us through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Like when you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, God comes into your life, he fills you, he lives inside of you, and the spirit, we're told, gives us these spiritual gifts, supernatural abilities to make a difference in this world that only you can make. And so your dreams, your hopes, your desires, they matter because God is going to use them for good and for his glory, and because of His grace, he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will. Someone say we will. We will, with confidence this time we will inherit eternal life because of your good things, because you showed up the church, because you'd wore a nice shirt, because he prayed some prayers. No, because of his phrase, because God gave us something we don't deserve. He made us right in his sight, and because it's all because of Jesus and not because of us, we can have confidence that we will inherit eternal life, that we will be saved, because it's not up to me. It's not up to what I do. And you know, did I baptize you just right? You know, did I pray enough, that I show up at Church or enough? It's not about that. We can have confidence because it's in what Jesus did for us when he died on the Cross and paid the penalty for your sin and you rose again and he offers to everyone forgiveness, a sins and eternal life. We can have confidence that we will inherit eternal life because of what Jesus has done for us. So one more airport analogy as we wrap up our little sermon time together before we go outside and do our bapt...

I know it's probably been a while since you've been to the airport, but you know that once you go through security, you're good right, you can get on an airplane, you can show up to you know, buy something, you can use the restrooms, you could do all this stuff. Right when you're in through security, you're kind of free. But you get on your airplane, you land, you go find the baggage claim and you exit a door, or usually somebody's sitting there, but there's a line, like a literal line, on the floor and if you're on the one side of the line, you can do anything you want to do. You can ride on airplane, you can us, you know, you can do all that stuff. But if you cross that line, you're out. You got to go through security again. I can't, I just can I just go back like I you know, I just Oh, I forgot something. Nope, you can't. You can't go back. It's either you're in or you're out. You're either you're you're either in or you're out. And the same is true with your faith in Jesus are you're either in or you're not. Have you crossed the line of faith? Have you put your faith in Jesus Christ? Have you crossed that line to the other side? Now, you don't just be when you're born, automatically get to the other side of the line. Did you know that just because your parents are sort of Christians, or maybe Super Christians, and just because you kind of grew up in a sort of Christian country, or just because there was a Bible on the nightstand of the hospital room where you were born, and like that doesn't make you cross the line. You don't cross the line because you were born that way. You also don't cross the line because by accident, like you just don't wake up one day and be like, Oh, look, I'm a Christian. Wow, how that happened? I never been to church, I never my Bible, never pray a prayer, you know, like, I know, I don't even know how I did it, but I just did it. Look, I'm good. Like it doesn't happen that way either, and it also it also doesn't happen over the course of twenty five years either. Like it doesn't take an eternity the cross the line right, like I'm getting there eventually. You know, God uses seasons in our life, certainly to lead us to himself, to draw him to himself, but there is a moment in your life when God came to live inside of you and the person only spirit, when you put your faith in trust in him, you cross that line. And maybe today God is leading you to cross that line for the very first time. You've been playing with that line. You've been you've been going back and forth, you've been wondering, you know, I don't know.

I've been asking questions. I don't know. Maybe today's the day to cross that line and my invitation to you today, in ours very special baptism day, is get baptized today. If you're crossing that line for the very first time or for the first time in a really long time, get baptized today. If you've never been baptized before, get baptized. You're like, really, are you serious? Yeah, I am, I am serious. You're like, I didn't bring clothes, I didn't. You know, what about my hair and my makeup in my towel, and like we got all that stuff. We got all that stuff taken care of. We got t shirts, we got shorts, we got shoes, we got all of this stuff, because what baptism is is is a declaration, a symbol to the world that you have crossed that line of faith, that you are in with Jesus. Because of Jesus, because of what he has done for you, because of His grace and his mercy, he saved you and if he saved you, then let's show it to the world through baptism, and I'm serious, you could do it right now. And so I'm going to count to three and when I get two, three, those that are going to get baptized are going to stand up and they're going to go out into the lobby and they're going to find Jordan mariethy. She's sitting in the back right over here. She's going to help you get situated, get changed or get lined up, and then we're going to go outside and for everybody. So, at the count of three, here's what's going to happen. We're all going to make a lot of noise, cheering, clapping, celebrating, whatever you do when you're happy, because I think you're happy, at least I hope you are. I am. And so when I get the three, those that are going to get baptized are going to stand up. Then you're going to walk out and Jordan's going to help you. And so, whether you've been planning to get baptized for a couple weeks or you've been planning to get baptized for two minutes, I want you to get up. All right, you ready to count it down with or count it up with me? Ready one. You can do it. This is fun too. Come on, you can do it. If you're holding on, you're like, I'm not sure I could go. You should. Today's the day of salvation. God says, ready three. Come on, everybody, there we go. Let's go. Give it up for those that are getting baptized today. Come on, keep it going. They're still coming through. Awesome, awesome, awesome. So good to celebrate people who have made their profession of faith in Jesus Christ. They're showing it to the world. God saved them. That's what...

...it's all about. It's.
